Risking Life With Your Best Friend

Aquila and Priscilla show us a fascinating example of serving well together in Scripture.  Join Denna Busenitz (Sandhills of NE) and Madelyn Fox (Allakaket, AK) for this devotional series.

About 18 years pass between Aquila and Priscilla’s first and last mention in the Bible. We see 8 life actions used to describe their faithful ministry. Today, we see how they risked their lives together (Acts 18:2).

Life Action 5: They risked their lives serving together.

Romans 16:4, “They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.”

It takes a deep and intimate relationship with your spouse to work alongside each other and flourish.

The husband and wife duo, Priscilla and Aquila, are never mentioned apart from one another in the Scriptures. They not only served together in the church but also labored alongside each other in the work world.

What an extraordinary privilege we have as pastors’ wives to work alongside our best friend. It’s a job that most believers never have the blessing of experiencing.

Upon being accepted to a mission organization, a friend of mine said, “It’s going to be hard to be around my husband all day.” My husband and I have served in ministry together since our wedding day, so my friend’s concerns perplexed me.

When we moved to our bush village there was no one following Christ. We had to start our ministry from the ground up and trust the Lord to do the work. There were no believing friends to laugh or cry with; rather, my husband’s friendship sustained the laughter and comforted me on the tear-filled days. We served our community with the sole purpose of proclaiming Christ. And there’s no other friend I would choose to work alongside other than my husband.

Working, serving, and traveling with my best friend is a dream come true—a unique opportunity to sharpen each other and display God’s goodness in our marriage.

Just as the Word never records Priscilla and Aquila apart from the other, may we also be those characterized by a husband and wife duo that works together for Christ’s name.

Let us embrace the exceptional role of being recorded as ones who have worked well together as best friends, while striving toward the goal of proclaiming Christ to the world.

About Madelyn Fox

We are the Arctic Foxes. Our family was led by the Lord to serve in Alaska as church planter's years ago, and we've watched Him faithfully open doors for us to live among the Athabascan peoples of the North, declaring the praises of a Savior who is worthy. We live in a remote bush village located on the Arctic Circle. There is no Bible church in this village of about 150 people, and our prayer is to see the Lord establish a Body of believers in this village who proclaim and exalt God's Name and Renown, both in the village and surrounding villages.
